Triple Threat IV: Pros say hello to evo…

Days are getting shorter, the weather cooler, the mountain tops are slowly turning white while leaves are turning from green, and as movie premier season returns to Seattle so does the familiar excitement for winter and anticipation to be back on the snow.

Triple Threat IV took those feelings and amplified them Saturday night here at evo. Over 700 people showed up to watch the movies, meet the skiers and hope for the right raffle ticket at the end of the night. If they weren’t doing that… they were probably drinking more beers than necessary.
People began trickling in early and before long it was hard to move around anywhere easily. There were more Oakley blue jackets and beanies than you’d find in the park at Summit and almost everyone had at least one Red Bull in hand. From Nimbus, Chris Benchetler, Eric Pollard, Pep Fujas, and evo team rider Andy Mahre were out as were Cody Carter and some of the other guys from Poor Boyz and Theory 3, Dan and Cole from Schweizer terrain parks… and the list goes on. When the movies started the store was packed from the loft to the floor and the crowd spilled out into the beer garden. The tent was hooked up with sound and two flat screen TVs so people could have a beer while they watched. Or catch a few segments while they drank. Either way, it was a rad setup - no need for an afterparty with an event like that (although one did ensue down the street at the Triangle).
The movies were impressive. It’s clear that these are the guys who are setting the trend, not chasing it. They seemed to slow down and concentrate on what skiing really is and where it can take you, what you can experience because of it, both on and off snow. Poor Boyz, Theory-3 and Nimbus films are more thoughful and focused on positive energy and messaging than crazy montages of unreal action shots in anonymous locations. Especially memorable from Hunting Yeti was the juxtaposition between time passing in the city and the feelings and experiences skiers get from the mountains. It compliments the amazing terrain and action captured by the filmers and after watching it you’re left with a fresh reminder of what skiing means to you and why it matters, even if you can’t verbalize it yourself.
In addition to the four movies (yes 4, not three as “triple” would suggest - Quad Threat sounded too much like an underground roller derby battle), autographs were signed and Eric Pollard brought along 200 limited edition tees he designed to support Alpine Initiatives. They also raffled off a ton of stuff, including a pair of K2 Silencers and the grand prize, a trip to Windell’s next summer. (Pretty jealous of the guy who won that.) It was definitely the highlight of Fall events so far and it was awesome to see so many people so stoked for winter, from 11 year old kids to 60 year old men.
If you missed the night… bummer. But you can get ahold of Hunting Yeti and Journal online from evo.
Pray for snow!
